How Saying Yes Made Me a Fashion Photographer
Gautam Dhimal photographing luxury bridal couture in a high end hotel set for Vishal Kapoor.
Back in 2012, Vishal Kapoor kept urging me to shoot his luxury bridal and wedding couture collections.
I kept saying no.
I had never done a fashion shoot before, and at the time, I did not see myself stepping into the world of fashion photography or luxury bridal work.
Then one day, I said yes.
That single decision shifted everything.
What began as one collaboration slowly evolved into a creative partnership that shaped an entire direction in my work. From the very first shoot, his concepts pushed me into unfamiliar territory. Designing sets, working with couture, directing movement, and building frames that carried both style and narrative.
We moved between luxury hotels, constructed sets, and stylized runway environments. The work carried a certain energy. A blend of cinematic influence, couture detail, and visual storytelling that I had not explored before.
It forced me to respond differently.
To see differently.
Over time, that unfamiliar space became something I understood.
We created editorial campaigns, runway documentation, and conceptual fashion work that continued to evolve with each project. Every shoot brought new challenges, and with them came growth.
What started as hesitation became a defining part of my journey as a fashion and editorial photographer.
A lot of what followed in my career, the recognition, the opportunities, the direction, can be traced back to that one decision.
And to Vishal’s persistence.
Today, what began as a collaboration has grown into a long standing creative relationship, built on trust, experimentation, and a shared understanding of what the work demands.
For those who may not be familiar, Vishal Kapoor is known for his bold couture sensibility and strong visual identity within the fashion space. His approach goes beyond design. He shapes the entire experience, from concept to styling to final presentation.
Working closely with designers like him changes how you approach photography.
You begin to understand how garments move, how styling interacts with light, and how storytelling becomes central to fashion imagery.
Fashion photography, especially at the couture level, is never just about photographing clothing.
It is about translating a designer’s vision into something visual, something tangible, something that holds attention.
And that requires more than technical skill.
It requires collaboration.
THE MOMENT THAT SHIFTS EVERYTHING
Looking back, the transition did not happen overnight.
It happened through a series of decisions, most of them uncertain at the time.
Saying yes to something unfamiliar is often where new directions begin.
In this case, it opened the door to fashion photography, editorial work, and collaborations that would continue to grow over the years.
WORKING WITH DESIGNERS AND BRANDS
Fashion photography at this level is built on collaboration.
Designers, stylists, models, and creative teams all contribute to the final image. The photographer becomes part of that system, shaping and translating ideas into visuals.
From couture collections and bridal campaigns to editorial and runway work, each project requires a balance between creative freedom and brand identity.
Understanding that balance is where the work becomes consistent.
BUILDING FASHION STORIES
Every fashion project begins with a concept.
But it is the execution that defines it.
Location, lighting, styling, direction, and timing all come together to create a cohesive visual narrative. Whether in a controlled studio or on location, the goal remains the same.
To create images that feel intentional.
