FILM PRODUCTION, PHOTOGRAPHY & VISUAL STORYTELLING

Nepal • The Himalayas • Worldwide

Gautam Dhimal is a Nepali film producer, line producer and photographer whose work brings together film production, commercial and editorial photography, aerial imaging and long term visual research. For more than 25 years, he has worked with international production teams, broadcasters, publications, brands and organisations across Nepal and the Himalayas, helping turn creative ideas into projects that can be realised on the ground.

His work ranges from managing film and advertising productions in Nepal to photographing people, landscapes and fashion, often in places where access, local knowledge and careful planning are as important as the camera. Alongside commissioned assignments, he develops independent projects that explore place, memory and environmental change.

Film and Television Production in Nepal

International productions working in Nepal need more than a location and a crew. They need people who understand the country, can work through local requirements, anticipate logistical challenges and help visiting teams operate safely and efficiently. Gautam has worked in film and advertising production since 2001, with experience spanning production planning, line production, location research, permits, crew coordination and field logistics.

As Executive Producer of Location Nepal, he works with international and local teams on productions ranging from commercials and branded films to documentaries and other screen projects. The work includes location scouting, local crew and equipment, transport, accommodation, access arrangements and coordination in remote or high altitude environments. Projects have involved international names such as BBC, Disney, FX, Red Bull, Coca Cola, Panasonic and others, across a variety of production contexts.

A campaign filmed in the historic cities of Bhaktapur and Patan for Nippon Paint, for example, involved more than 200 crew members and approximately 400 extras. Productions of this scale depend on detailed preparation, local coordination and the ability to respond when conditions change. That practical experience informs the way Gautam approaches production, from an initial brief to the final day on location.

Photography for Publications, Brands and People

Gautam’s photography covers editorial assignments, portraits, travel, landscapes, commercial campaigns and documentary work. His approach is shaped by the needs of the assignment, the people involved and the conditions in which the photographs are made. A commissioned portrait, a fashion campaign and a long term documentary project each demand a different kind of preparation and attention.

His work in Nepal and beyond has brought him into contact with people and places across very different settings, from cities and studios to villages, mountain trails and high altitude landscapes. He works with publications, creative teams, brands and individuals who need photographs that are carefully considered and grounded in their subject rather than simply produced to fit a visual trend.

For assignments involving travel, fashion, portraits or location based photography, his photography portfolio offers an introduction to the range of his work. Commission enquiries can be made through GautamDhimal.com.

Fashion Campaigns and Productions in Unusual Places

Fashion photography often becomes most interesting when the setting is an active part of the story. Gautam’s work in this field includes production and photography in landscapes and locations that demand more than a conventional studio setup. Working in the Himalayas or other challenging environments means balancing the creative brief with travel, weather, access, equipment, local coordination and the needs of the people in front of the camera.

His work on Himalayan Fashion Adventure brought fashion photography into the Himalayan landscape. In 2022, the project received third place in the Advertising/Fashion Professional category at the International Photography Awards (IPA). The award entry provides a record of the recognition.

For brands and creative teams planning a fashion shoot in Nepal, Gautam’s experience connects the photographic brief with the practical demands of making the work possible. Through Location Nepal, the Himalayan Fashion Production Photography Learning Experience also offers an opportunity to explore the relationship between fashion, location and production in the field.

Aerial Photography and the Himalayas

Aerial photography has been part of Gautam’s work for years, including open door helicopter assignments over the Himalayas. These projects offer perspectives that cannot always be achieved from the ground, but they also require careful planning around flight operations, weather, camera systems, access and safety.

His aerial work includes helicopter photography, drone photography and filming, using consumer and professional commercial drones according to the requirements of the assignment. From location surveys and landscape photographs to film sequences, advertising campaigns and visual documentation, the choice of platform depends on the subject, the intended image, operating conditions and the permissions required. His helicopter aerial photography work across Nepal and the Himalayas sits alongside this wider range of location based visual production.

For photographers who want to understand what it takes to work with a camera from an open door helicopter, the Open Door Himalayan Helicopter Photography Learning Experience offers a practical introduction to this demanding form of aerial photography. Working from a helicopter involves much more than pointing a camera at the mountains. Preparation, communication, flight conditions, camera handling and safety all influence what can be achieved.

Some aerial projects are commissioned for films, travel campaigns or publications. Others grow into longer investigations of landscape and environmental change, where returning to a place and comparing what has changed can be as important as the individual photograph.

Long Term Projects, Field Research and Environmental Change

Not all of Gautam’s work begins with a commercial brief or ends when a production wraps. Some projects develop over years, built from field visits, conversations, photographs and the gradual accumulation of material that may take time to understand.

The Vanishing Himalayas draws on Gautam’s aerial archive from the Everest and Khumbu region in 2005 and the questions raised by returning to familiar landscapes after many years. The project looks at what photographs can tell us about change, and what they cannot tell us without context, comparison and the knowledge of people who live in those places. It forms part of a wider interest in visual documentation, environmental change and the responsibility that comes with recording other people’s lives and landscapes.

Through the Gehendra Dhimal Foundation, Gautam also supports work that brings creative practice into conversation with social questions, representation and participation. Until We Act is an initiative of the foundation that creates space for knowledge, stories and perspectives connected to Nepal and the Hindu Kush Himalaya.

These projects sit alongside his commissioned work but follow a different rhythm. They rely on returning, listening, asking better questions and allowing the material to develop rather than forcing it into a predetermined conclusion.

Experience Built in the Field

Gautam’s work crosses photography, film production, research and the practical coordination required to work in Nepal. These are related disciplines, but they are not interchangeable. Each assignment brings its own responsibilities, and the work often depends on understanding how creative ambitions meet the realities of a location, a schedule, a budget and the people involved.

He serves on the International Feature Film Selection Committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a role he has held since 2023. He is also Chairperson of the Gehendra Dhimal Foundation and Editorial Director of MORPH Magazine, extending his involvement into cultural work, publishing and projects that engage with Nepal’s creative communities.

Across these roles, the common thread is a long working relationship with images and the circumstances in which they are made. Whether the task involves a visiting film crew, a commissioned photograph, an aerial assignment or a project that takes years to develop, preparation and local understanding remain central to the work.
